flowers dying on non-cherry varieties

I just came back from a 5 day vacation and noticed that most of the flowers on the upper branches of my larger variety tomatoes (both in my 5-1-1 containers and in the raised beds in my veggie garden) are starting to wilt and not produce fruit. My cherry tomatoes are still producing however. In the pics below, the two larger plants are my cherry varieties while the others are: Mortgage Lifter, Brandywine Pink, Lemon Boy, Cherokee Purple, and Cherokee Chocolate.

Any idea why? My wife did not water them during my absence because of heavy rains at night during my trip.

Nice-looking setup, the plants look healthy.

Since it's gable end, I don't think the pots got soaked - have you checked the soil? They might have gotten less water than she thought being right against the house like that, though I don't see leaves wilting or rolling in your closeups.

They're obviously getting enough sun, but wondering what direction that side of the house faces, how many hours of sun? Have you grown in that location before? How hot did it get while you were gone?

While the plants look great, a light-colored house, the concrete and brick nearby (though low), and a southern exposure plus high temperatures (?) could be contributing to blossom drop and if that's the case, it could get worse as the summer goes on.

Need more info please, but since I do see fruit set and the plants look healthy I wouldn't worry about those flowers right now. Oh, but last picture, I do see some yellow leaves maybe spotted - check for disease starting with all that rain - you may need to remove some foliage and spray fungicide.

I'm assuming the nj at the front of your user name means you garden in New Jersey and if so you've been hammered with these recent wicked storms just as I have in upstateNY.

And what can happen is that if the newest blossoms are still not fully open, they can turn blackish and drop, just due to being rotten. Nothing to do with high sustained heat or humidity, which are the usual reasons for traditional blossom drop.

Does that make sense to you?( smile)

You can't really can't on rain to adequately water containers. The drip line of the plant is outside the container so very little of downfall actually ends up in the soil of the container. Rather it falls outside to the ground.

Sure the plants benefit some just from the increased moisture in the air but the soil in the containers still requires actual watering most of the time even after a heavy rainfall.

That side of the house faces South and gets full sun all day long. I watered the very next morning upon returning from my trip and my newer blooms are looking better already. It probably was a case of not enough water.

They don't look like they dried out enough to drop the blossoms. No yellow leaves or nothing like that.
And the pictures do not show blossom drop... blossom drop is when the entire flower falls off at the knuckle, no. Yours are still attached and just look like the flowers have run their course. Are you sure there are not small fruits inside the dried flower petals?
