I just tasted the second of my Yellow Pear derivatives. This is a Tomato that was supposed to be YP but it crossed with another variety (Stupice?) It has potato leaves and produced yellow cherries very early. Since the taste was better than my first fruit, my thoughts are turning to how I would proceed next year. How many plants would I need to grow next year to get something decent? I can obviously weed out anything that doesn't have a potato leaf at an early stage. TIA,

Linda, if YP crossed with Stupice, which is red, the F1 seeds would give red fruits, b'c red is dominant to yellow. Two possibiities. Saved seeds from one fruit can give both F1 and self pollenized OP seeds, but sinceYP is RL that wouldn't make sense since you say what you have is PL. There are two yellow/gold Cherries that do have PL foliage, one is Yellow Submarine, a better YP if you will and another one is Galina's Yellow.I'm sure there are many more but those came to mind ASAP. But as long as you do feel that you have an F1 with PL leaves, then you need to plant out as many plants as you have room for. And that's b/c genetic segregation is at work. I don't know if your goal is looking for another YP with PL foliage, or what" Do you know what your goal is or just interested to see what you might find? Carolyn

Hi Carolyn, I wish I had a better memory, but I honesty can't remember if my YP have always been Potato Leaved (PL). You'd think that if YP crossed with Stupice, it would have red fruit and Regular Leaves. Instead, it apparently took both recessive traits. All 6 of my YP seedlings had PL's and the two plants that I kept both have the wrong fruit this year, ie round yellow cherries instead of yellow pear shaped cherries. BTW I have been growing this YP variety for 8 years and saving my own seeds. I checked with the seed sanctuary where I originally obtained the seeds, and they say that their YP have PL's (as expected) and that they don't have another cherry variety with pear-shaped fruit and PL's. The curious thing is that when I obtained my plants from Robert Mouke (who has since retired), I remember him saying that they were rare. I forgot the name he gave me, but researched on line and decided that they must be YP as they looked identical with the narrow neck. Yellow Submarine looks stouter and Yellow Teardrop is more translucent. Maybe they were rare because they had the PL??? My wish is for early fruit with good taste. YP is mid-season with questionable taste. These were very early, so this project might be worth doing. Cheers,

Linda, I know the Sactuary of which you speak and at one time also knew Robert. The nuns have distributed seed of many wrong varieties, that I can tell you. And if they say their YP is PL, then that surprises me as well. Other than theones I mentioned above There used to be someone from Canada who posted elsewhere and lived near the Sanctuary and told some pretty scary stories as to how they did seed production and more. There used to be a website for them. If there still is one can you post it here and maybe we can figure out what's going on with a PLYP and what they named it. Carolyn, but didn't you say that you thought you had an F1 that had crossed with Stupice and that's where the PL came from, but it couldn't have been Stupice from what I wrote above. And now you say, differently, that your YP should be PL b'c the nuns say so.( smile)

Hi Carolyn, I'm sorry that I confused you. I meant to say that the Seed Sanctuary said their YP was RL (as expected). Duh! I should find some old seed and grow one to see if it has PL and that will tell me whether it always was PL or if it has mutated/crossed. If the latter, Stupice is the only PL tomato that I have grown in recent years. In the meantime, I'm attempting to grow 6 of my F1's to see if they will fruit before frost hits in October! Thanks for the info about the Seed Sanctuary. That is disappointing. As a member of the public, they will not sell me seeds (just plants in the spring) and their website does not list their varieties :-(. Linda

And in the meantime I remembered one of my favorite PL YP and that's Medovaya Kaplya, which you can check out at Tania's wonderful website. It means Honey Drop in English, several seed sites sell it and how could I could forget it I don't know.( smile) Carolyn

Hi Carolyn, I just checked out Medovaya Kaplya at Tania's site and a few others and it looks great. People say it tastes a heck of a lot better than YP. Many thanks for the recommendation! Kind of hard to remember that one. Honey Drop would be a lot easier (G). Linda

I grew out a couple of seeds that I had saved in 2008, just to see if they would be Potato Leaf. They are! So, I have been growing this variety for at least 5 years and they have always had the yellow pear-shaped fruit and PL's. Did it suddenly revert to a round yellow cherry? That sounds like the simplest explanation. I have never grown any other yellow tomato varieties, although I have grown rosé cherries. (I don't know if rosé is recessive). We all have 2 acre lots, and none of my neighbours grows tomatoes. The only cross that I have noticed is from Garden Peach (which I disliked). Wouldn't you know it GP crossed with Rosé cherry and I ended up with fuzzy GP fruits on my "supposed" Rosé plants - yuck! Linda

At another message site where Linda also has been posting about this I just posted a lot of information and told her what she had beengrowing for 5 years was probably Yellow Submarine and gave her a link. As I also posted, it's anyones guess as to why she got cherries and not YP shaped ones of late. And made some other comments to her. So she can update you on this if she wants to since no links to other message sites are allowed here at GW. Carolyn
