I am growing about half a dozen different kinds tomatoes in the high desert. I am off the grid on 80 acres, so lots of other "critters" live here too. My garden area is fenced, so no deer or rabbits, however.....lots of mice and pack rats and some chipmunks and squirrels. Of all my tomatoes, most of the blossoms on my 5' tall San Marzano's have disappeared, therefore not producing much fruit. My husband thinks something is causing the blossoms to "fall off", I say something is eating them. Thoughts? I'm also having something eating my tomatoes, appears to be birds. But could also be other 4 legged critters! Trying to grow a garden out here is almost impossible!

Could be either but whenever I find whole blossoms snipped off the stems I think of thrips first. I know birds will snip leaves during nest building times but don't know why they'd just go for a bloom. Mice of course will eat anything but the blooms would be hard to reach above ground level. So my first assumption is always insects of some kind. This, of course, assuming it isn't just plain old Blossom Drop. Dave

Is there a way to determine if it is "Blossom Drop", and a way to prevent it? Thanks for the reply!
