The Elfin

Has anyone germinated and grown this variety? I have and here is what I have experienced to date as of 7-22-2014:

First fruit....65 days it is listed as 60.
Height: approx.; 40" within the range
Container: 8 gallon size

It has produced plenty of fruit. They turn bright red BUT never soften and remain hard regardless of whether I let them remain on the vine or bring them in the house to ripen.

Feedback would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

RE: The Elfin

you mention they stay firm which sounds good. what is the taste like. After all people want the tom to stay firm and not go mushy fast.

but you make no mention of the taste.

Thanks for your followup Chew. I did some research on my own and found a grower who did comparisons of various grape tomatoes. He gave the Elfin variety a low grade because it never softened at all and remained hard. In addition, it has a very tough skin. Keep in mind it is only 1" long about 1/2 " in diameter. Certainly not good for a salad. As to it's taste ...average at best..not sweet. The only thing you can use this variety for is if you blend it up along with other fruits and vegetables and make a "smoothie"! I'm going to contact the site where I purchased to seed for their thoughts etc.

It wasn't named The Elfin by Steve of Heritage seeds, just Elfin, and the link below tells you more about it and when you click on seed availabilty on that page you'll see where it's sold.

Short term memory here but I do think that Heritage Seeds, Steve and his sister Marla did breed it and is listed as one of the seed sources.

Hope that helps

And yes I know Steve and Marla b'c they post where I do.

Thanks for the followup. The ...the wasn't added to denote the name of the variety but only for grammar purposes, I always will begin a topic/thread with a capital letter. I didn't purchase "Elfin" from Heritage but from another supplier. Thanks

RE: The Elfin

As a follow up to my original post. My original question was "has anyone ever germinated this variety ( Elfin) and what did they experience and what were their results. I was only asking for "experiences".

RE: The Elfin

To answer your question directly, no, I've never grown it but I thought it might be helpful to give a bit of background information about it. ( smile)
