tomatoes on the ground

My first 6 tomatoes are sitting on the ground. I'm afraid rabbits will get to them or that they will rot on the ground. I've never had this happen before. I plan to circle the cage with some kind of screen or barrier to try to deter the many rabbits but should I put cardboard or newspaper under the tomatoes? Or are they ok on the ground which is covered with leaves? Any other ideas? It will not be easy to get a barrier around the plant.

If it's just the one plant put a liberal sprinkling of ground cayenne pepper around it. If you have several plants consider it a peace offering and let em have it if they want it. Rabbits and other critters will often take a bite , spit it out and go on their way. This often happens to my lower tomatoes.

Looks like they're sitting on mulch, no need for anything else under them

Thank you. Its just the one plant where the tomatoes are this low. I will try the cayenne pepper.
