| well, I tend to choose keeper tomato varieties by first 3 categories- for my zone 5 garden it has to be early, productive and tasty to earn its real estate so I am up to a good number of those. I prefer large ones as I mostly can for salsa, sauces etc. So again many large hearts and beefs. I try to keep variety of colors and shapes too. |
| Good Topic. In my case, it is still to early to call in some categories. 1. Best tasting : To Early to name One. |
| Just going with what I'm growing-- 1. Best tasting 2. Most productive In amount of fruit to size ratio of production, I'd give it to red robin. The plant is six inches and loaded. However it won't be nearly as productive overall as any of the bigger plants. 3. Earliest producer 4. Largest 5. Ugliest 6. Tallest (plant) |

| 1. Best tasting - Cherokee Purple or Gary'O Sena for slicing tomatoes, Sungold for cherries. 2. Most productive - Last year I grew a Rutgers Select that produced approximately 230 tomatoes, but Big Beef is the most consistent heavy producer that I've grown. Also, Sungold which produces 100's of cherry tomatoes. 3. Earliest producer - Sungold 4. Largest - Cherokee Purple (25 oz.) 5. Ugliest - ?? 6. Tallest (plant) - My plants always flop over when they exceed the height of my CRW cages, but the biggest plant is always a Sungold. They typical get 12' to 15' in diameter in my garden. 7. Overall Favorite - Brandy Boy (for balanced tomatoey flavor, productivity, and earliness) Sungold was mentioned in 4 categories. It's probably not a coincidence that it's got a permanent spot on my grow lists. |

| About 10 years ago when I first started growing tomatoes I grew, among a lot of others, the brandywine. It was prolific and delicious!! In the years after that, although they were nice, the flavour wasn't so good and I didn't get many. But this year the brandywines were again delicious and better than I have ever tasted. Much better than the others I grew. Maybe it has to do with the weather conditions because this summer was really good weather wise. |

| hi maj742, why do you think Matino's roma is disappointing? not productive or something else? I am planning to plant some for next year. This year I also planted two. But I started so late that I don't think they will have any chance to mature. |
| Aaron, My garden here in Green Bay had many great tomatoes, but I thought Martino's Roma was tasteless, mealy and dry. The bush was first to attract a leaf disease which spread to other Martinos and to other nearby varieties. They were very small fruits, which tended to drop to the ground easily even when they were green. I also thought my other roma, Polish Linquisa was tasteless, dry, mealy, and the fruits cracked a lot after rain. I guess I am done with romas. |
