Anyone tried Ginger's Golden Delicious?

This year I bought a Ginger's Golden Delicious plant, billed at the nursery to be a "local favorite".
So far it is a monster plant, stuffed into its five foot tall cage and overflowing out the top, with oodles of fruit, and the first almost ripe tomato I have fills two hands.

Has anyone else grown it? I sure hope it tastes yummy, because I think I want to save seed!

Carla, I know of the variety Golden Delicious, but not Ginger's Golden Delicious. Perhaps they tacked on the Ginger part for some reason ala a local person since you said it was a local favorite, but Golden Delicious itself has been known for quite a long time.

I haven't grown it but can tell you what those who list it in the SSE Yearbook have to say about it if no one else here has grown it.

Carolyn:

When I googled it, I only found one website, which I think is the farm that grew my start. It's got a photo--maybe you can look at it to see if it's the same as the one you know?

Thanks so much,

From the SSE descriptions it does sound like Golden Delicious, called Big Golden Delicious by some, and I can't tell from the picture at that link but it's supposed to be beefstak shaped.

Very few folks have listed it over the years and the SSE accession # for it indicates that it's been around probably since the early to mid 1980's.

Carla, seldom have I seen so much really wrong information about varieties as I did at that site. many are said to be heirlooms when they aren't, and Oregon Spring was described as a Russian tomato, blah, blah, when it was bred by Dr. J Baggett at Oregon State Univeristy.

And there's a whole lot more errors.

Unfortunately I think they just added the name Ginger to the proper name for the variety which is Golden Delicious to indicate a local association. And I'm sure you know how I feel about that. ( smile)
