Diseased Tomato Vines

This year for the first time my tomato plants are dying from the ground up. Is this a form of "root rot?" I know that it is too late to do anything this year, but how can I best address this problem for the following years?

Close up of affected leaves and image of entire plant.

tomatoes are very subject to fungal diseases. However, yours could be soil disease....without pics or a very descriptive ID....we are guessing.
