What did I do wrong, did I over water, my tomatoes taste no better than buying from a grocery store. I have planted Goliath bush variety in a whiskey barrel, added black plastic, new soil.

Have you had a lot of extra rain this year like most of us? If so that explains it. If not then over-watering is a possibility. But lots of factors contribute to the flavor of a tomato, including the variety, the weather, the type/brandname of soil, the nutrients provided, how often fed and watered, etc. so we'd need all the specific details on your growing methods to know if there was actually anything 'wrong'. Have you grown that variety before and been happy with the flavor? Dave

I have never planted this variety of a tomato and I am very disappointed. I used miracle grow potting soil and mixed in compost about 50/50. I live in Minnesota so average rainfall and fertilize about once a month. The tomatoes are beautiful just not tasty at least the one I have had so far. I have about 4 or 5 more to harvest that are ready but I am waiting thinking they may taste better. I hope this gives you enough history to give advice. Thanks in advance.

I think Dave pretty much nailed it, but you may never know the actual reason(s) because there's just too many possibilities, including your local climate, which may not favor that variety of tomato. There is a decent chance that the next round of tomatoes will taste better.

Often the first few tomatoes you get off a plant are not as flavorful as the later ones, so you might wait to see if your later tomatoes taste better. Just fyi, I did a google search on "factors that affect tomato sweetness" and there are some interesting discussions out there. Tried to post one but apparently GW doesn't like that web site and wouldn't let me.
