Romas really slow to turn red (not orange)?

I'm finding that I need to pick my romas a bit early, since I have animals that like to chew on them. Plus, they seem to fall to the ground very quickly when they begin to ripen.

Do you find that you end up eating/freezing/canning them when they are still mostly orangish-red and still a bit firm?
