Hello I have a quick ??? about fertilizer. Im sorry if I sound ignorant, I am from north central Missouri and am growing celebrity tomatoes and I am wondering if I can still fertilize my plants, even though they have tomatoes on and the temps are going to be near 100, will it hurt the plants???? I fertilized early with miracle grow tomato fertilizer, and the plants did real well. thanks Ben

It is getting awfully late in Missouri to fertilize now. The season is quickly coming to an end. If you feed them now they will go back into a leafy growth mode when what they need to be focused on now is ripening the existing fruit. Next year plan to feed them more than just the one time much earlier in the season. This is assuming they are in the ground. If these are in a container then fertilizing is a whole different ball game, a totally different set of guidelines. Dave

Thanks Dave, I was just curious if fertilizer would do them any good now or not. I do have them in the ground and did fertilize them often earlier in the season, which btw I did not do last year, and now my tomatoes are doing a lot better this year thank last!!! Thank you very much for the information. Ben

| Did you use the red MG or the slow-release MG? I avoid the quick release MG. The guy two door down used it for his tomatoes last year. His plants were huge, but no fruit. He said he used per instructions. I would not use fertilizer on bush type tomato plants this late in the season. I might try it on indeterminate plants, 1/3 or 1/2 of recommended amount, but after the heat wave ends.

I used the red MG, I was not aware there was a difference in MG tomato fertilizer. My plants look good and are loaded with tomatoes, but I sure don't want to continue to use it if I could be using something better. Any suggestions??? Thanks Ben

Dave said it all. In MO and many other places, fertilizing tomatoes at this time is not going to do much good. Remember that most nutrients stick around for quite a while , if planted in the ground. Exception might be the Nitrogen but you don't need that now anyway.

Seysonn: You don't think there is any chance that a indeterminate cherry tomato might benefit from fertilizer this late in the season? I have not used fertilizer on my tomatoes past the month of August, but mainly out of laziness. I usually get cherry tomatoes thru the end of October. State of Missouri.
