Mikalych - Huge Globe-shaped Fruit

This is a Russian Variety that I received in a trade last year with a young lady in the Ukraine. I also received several others which were not known here in the U.S. before. This one is maybe the best of the bunch, but the others are not to be thrown away either. Out of 12 varieties traded, eight are definite keepers.

The following are a couple of pictures that should have you drooling.

This is the big one out of the above picture. I've had one that was a bit over 2 pounds.

Ted, are you referring to Marina in the Ukraine?

I'm worried about her since the problems there started, have sent her two e-mails with no response.

I think the variety you speak of was on one of her previous lists, but it's not one I requested.

So I checked it out at Tania's site, and yes, it was one you got from Marina, link below

Carolyn, not to deter the thread but it sucks big time in Ukraine now. My brother who had narrowed time escaping from Lugansk, sent me few varieties from local gardener this past spring, am looking to growing it next year.
However Marina lives in Russia and there is no war there...
Containerted, have grown Mikhalych this year as well. Excellent tomato.

Yes, Carolyn. I got the seeds from Marina and, yes, I'm concerned for her safety with the current situation over there.

I expected 9-16 ounce good tasting tomatoes just like Tatianna got, but mine just kept growing and growing. I had to put in some extra support because the load was getting larger all the time. So far, I've gotten 21 fruits and the smallest one weighed in at 18.5 ounces. I think the obvious size difference is probably the warmer climate here in Tennessee as opposed to Tania's weather in British Columbia.

Regardless, these babies are tasty, firm-fleshed, and plentiful. I already have plans for about 6 plants in next year's garden instead of the one I have this year. I also mentioned another variety I got from Marina and that's Ukrainka. I'll do a thread on that one in a day or two.

Thanks, for the correction that she lives in Russia, I had thought she and her husband lived in the Ukraine at one time.

Two years ago we didn't exchange seeds since she said her son had entered kindergarden and she didn't have the time to grow out what she usually did.

I know she wanted to start a commercial seed site but I don't know where that's at either.

She and her husband spent several years in FL and that's where she perfected her English.

My e-mails were not returned as in no addy known, so maybe I'll try her again. She'd send me what I requested off my seed offer listings and then I let her pick the same number off my seed offer list.

I just checked, and her last e-mail to me was in early 2014 and yes, it ended in ru (Russia), and telling me why she wasn't trading seeds this year.

Containerted, are you growing another variety that Marina shared, Gritsyk, by chance? I am seeing it on Tania growout list for this year but no seeds yet...
I am wondering how is it...

RE: Mikalych - Huge Globe-shaped Fruit

No, I didn't get that one. but it sounds interesting. I got about 10 varieties and each was about 10 seeds. Mikhalych, Larisa, Koral King II, Malinovoe Chudo, Rozoviy Flamingo, Sizranskiy Rozoviy, Tsindao, Yaponskiy Krab, and Dikaya Rosa. Another I got from Marina and also grew this year is Ukrainka. It is also one that I'm going to review. It is a paste type and is about the size and shape of Prue, but is so much more productive. 4 to 6 ounce fruit and lots of them on an Indeterminate plant. I'll do pictures in another thread.

Maybe we should get together with PM's at that other site and do a trade.

Ted, that Pink Flamingo one is a difficult one. The person who was doing seed production for me sent me pictures, they didn't correspond to what it should be, I sent the pictures to Tania. and even she had trouble figuring out what it could be.

And I can see why, see her link below and note that several different fruit shapes are possible.

I just checked my recent seed offer and I don't see it there for the past 3 years, so apparently I never offered seeds for it.

I'd have to do some searching to find the last list she sent me to see what I did get. But I think that might be two years ago now.

Carolyn, always interested in Russian varieties, hint, hint, re any trades, and got lots of new Russian ones from Reinhard Kraft in Germany that are being gown out for seeds this summer for my next seed offer, if all goes well. And some other Russian ones as well, and Tania is all excited about the two new ones I have from the Republic of Georgia.Aha, lots of new ones from Andrey in Belarus as well, most not grown out b'c my seed producers had no more room. Sigh. Why my interst in Russian ones? Probably b'c I'm of Swedish heritage and we Swedes were the first to settle parts of Russia. I hear a mens Russian chorus and dissolve into a pool of protoplasm which is why Andrey sent me some CD's as well as some icon cards.( smile)

Yes, Pink Flamingo was either unstable or mix as shapes reported were different, but majority of people reported excellent taste so it is on my list for next year.
Am looking forward to Ukrainka as Prue was less than stellar performance this year and I need another paste.
This year I've grown Malinovoye Chudo and Syzranka which is probably Syzranskiy Rozovyi. Syzranka is late one for me, otherwise is really good. Like Malinovoye Chudo too which translates Raspberry delight.
Oh goody for new tomatoes!!!!
