Dunkel's Original Tomato Plant Fortifier

This product is being advertised as great for tomatoes. It is apparently a really old product which someone discovered the formula for and is now bringing back. Anyone ever hear of it? Their new product is Dunkel's Tomato Turbo. It is applied as a foliar spray once a month and is said to be organic.

What is the formula ? What the labels says ??
Is it a secret formula ? ? ?

Most water soluble fertilizer can be applied foliarly. Miracle Grow is a champion on this. But in fact, most of that stuff ends up on the soil and reaches the roots.

We (everybody) know what tomato plant needs and there is no secret. I see all those brandizing fertilizers with a "TOMATO" prefix as marketing gimmicks.

Before you pass judgement on a product you should first try it out. If you would like a free sample please email me at

I just asked OP, what the label says ? I assumed that he has tried it and has/ can read the package. I am not going to run out and but every product based on CLAIMS. I know a few fertilizers that have "tomato" in their name. And I know they are not any different from other ordinary plant foods.

I asking again, PLEASE tell us what the ingredients are:
Thanks

The thing about Uncle Dunkel's is that it contains amine based chelated miconutrients. These are organic and water soluble and readily absorbed by both the stomata and dermis of the leaves. Commercial growers are using these chelated micronutrients because they significantly increase yield. I will be trying this next year as I see no other similar product available for home gardeners. Theoretically it should give a boost and I believe, based on all I have read, that it is worth a try. I like to give new products a shot just like the guy who ate the first chocolate chip cookie did.

In my humble opinion...this is NOT a good NPK ratio for tomato growing.

 o
RE: Dunkel's Original Tomato Plant Fortifier

Far more to a foliar supplement than NPK.

RE: Dunkel's Original Tomato Plant Fortifier

In my opinion, The only major difference here is a huge amount of Epsom Salt , resulting in 9.8% magnesium and 12.9% sulfur .THE DRAMATIC EFFECT OF THIS FERTILIZER CAN LOWE pH AND ACIDIFY SOIL. . As the experts tell us, most garden vegetables(including tomatoes) can thrive best withing a pH range of 6.8 to 7.2. (7 being neutral) . When you supplement you fertilizer at 23% epsom salt(magnesium sulfate), it can acidify soil, no doubt.

As far as N, P, K is concerned, it does not make any difference to the plant where do the come from, amino acid, organic matter or synthetic source, as long as they are available.
Water soluble nutrients is nothing new either .
The Other concept is foliar feeding. It is also a know method. Plants CAN absorb anything that is dissolved in water. But the effect in the so-called foliar feeding is not that great, because MOST of what is sprayed on the leaves ends up on the soil that subsequently goes down and reaches the root system.

Your not going to get enought run off from foliar feeding to change anything in your soil. If you do you are applying it incorrectly. As far as the effects of foliar feeding are not that great, try this. Foliar feed one of your plants some RoundUp (glyphosate).

RE: Dunkel's Original Tomato Plant Fortifier

I don't think anyone who has even the slightest knowledge of foliar feeding believes it is nonexistant. The question I think that was brought up bySeysoon, correct me if I am wrong, relates to the value of applying macronutrients and micronutrients to the leaves. Macronutrients are best applied to the soil as they are needed by the plants in great amounts. Micronutrients are valuable when applied to the leaves if there exists a deficiency relative to their availability in the soil. Micronutrients can often get "locked up" in the soil by forming water insoluble compounds even moreso than NPK.They may be in the soil but not available to the plants roots.

You are correct growneat.

RE: Dunkel's Original Tomato Plant Fortifier

Uncle Dunkel: You are not allowed to promote your commercial product on Gardenweb.

Everyone else: If you visit Uncle's website, you will see no details about the contents of this product and no objective evidence that it works. The only testimonial I saw was from the author of Giant Tomatoes, who said it didn't work for him because he used it too late in the season, but he thinks it sounds good and will try again.

RE: Dunkel's Original Tomato Plant Fortifier

Original questions was "Ever heard of it?"

Answer is no, not before this blatant advertising of it - which I am surprised has not been pulled by now - and never in over 50 years of growing tomatoes. It has never come up for discussion on this forum in the more than 12 years I have been here and that alone should tell you something.

Not surprisingly millions of tons of tomatoes are grown annually without using it. Does that mean it is bad or a waste of money? Not at all. Just that it, like so many of the quizzical products out there, it is an unknown with experienced tomato growers.

RE: Dunkel's Original Tomato Plant Fortifier

I have been growing tomatoes for 40 years without a foliar supplement. Can I continue to do that? Sure, but what I have found I can grow a much healtlier plant. A healthy plant produces more fruit, heavier fruit, and a better tasting fruit. Just like Dave said just because you have never heard of a product doesn't make it bad and a waste of money.
I have never ask anyone to buy this product or direct them to my website. Only ask them not to pass judgement on a product until they tried it. Offering a free sample to those that want to try it.
If I have broken the rules please accept my apologies.
