Rambling VS staked?

This is the first year I have had staked tomatoes that look so stressed --- we have had lots of rain and when the sun comes out, the whole plant wilts. The only really lush staked plant is Slavic Masterpiece - it hasn't wilted at all and is full of fruit. I have 12 varieties.

The varieties that have not been staked are all looking just great but I really don't like the fruit sitting on the ground. This is the first year I have allowed any to ramble and am glad I did since those are the only ones (with the only exception being Sl. Msterpiece) that are doing very well - getting new flowers and new fruit. (I ran out of cages.)

What is going on here? I am not new at growing tomatoes. I have done it for about 50 years. I have never had this wilting problem before. BTW, I use the same cages made of reinforced concrete wire - about 2' X 6' with one plant to each cage.
