I'm looking for some insight here from anyone who can help me out. So this year I decided to go with a Rutgers determinate variety of tomato (I'm more into canning sauce than eating tomatoes fresh). My 22 plants are doing great and as of today, two tomatoes are ripe and ready to pick. My problem is that I leave for a business trip in 7 days (August 27th) and won't be back to my garden until September 10th. Has anyone had any experience with determinate tomatoes where you could tell me how long after you noticed the first ripe tomatoes, the whole crop ripened? I would be pretty bummed if I'm gone while my whole crop turns red! Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks!

If it were me, I would stash the ripe fruit in the freezer as it ripens and ask a trusted friend to harvest the rest for me, telling him/her that they could enjoy some of the ripe tomatoes. The frozen tomatoes would then be used later for canning, along with the ripe ones. Linda

Because you will be out of town : -- put the very ripe ones in the refrigerator. -- pick any and all the tomatoes with a hint of color and place them in a cardboard box inside lots of crumble newspaper, put the box in a relatively cool place (like basement). By the time you return ( in 7 days) they should be ripening. Anything else on the plant wont have a chance to over ripen in that time(7 days)
