repotting tomatoes with fruit and blooms

I've never grown tomatoes before. On impulse bought a couple of small plants and put them in small ((6" diameter) pots. Now (middle of August), they have small fruit and lots of flowers and have quadrupled their original height. Am sure the pots are too small. Can I repot them this late?

Soak them well first...and go for it. Most of your growing season has past. However, you might get some to mature in time...depending on the variety.

The key is to keep any disturbance to the root system to an absolute minimum. I don't recommend a soaking before moving the plant to a larger container. Try to get the roots and all the growing medium out in one piece. Place it into the new pot and fill in around it with new potting mix. THEN water it in well. Don't get it wetter than you have before. Tomato plants don't like changes.

If you are careful, you'll not have any lost fruit or blossoms. I've transferred a plant from a three gallon nursery pot to a 5 gallon bucket with complete success. I've also transferred from a 5 gallon bucket to an 18 gallon pot. It just takes planning and some help, if you have it.

If you have to tug on the plant to get it out, grab the main stem all the way down at the bottom and be gentle. Nudge it loose.

I would ALWAYS water any thing that is going transplanted, shortly before actual transplant. It also facilitated removal from the old container.

To do anything like that you have to have A PLANT with everything you need.
== you have the new container (~~)half full and previously wetted.
== You have additional potting mix handy.
== You can just cut the old cantainer,remove the plant gently and put it in the new container(right at the middle)
== fill, and pack the mix around it, (even higher than old level)
== water it ...

I know what Ted was trying to say when he disputed what I said about a thorough soaking. If a plant is not well-rooted it can fall apart perhaps a bit easier when wet. I have transplanted hundreds of plants, stone fruits, avocados, etc. The number one enemy is having the roots dry out. As stated above...the roots are key! It sure sounds to me that your small 6 inch pots are going to be root-bound. Not a huge problem. It will overcome.
