 o
Smoky Mountain prone to blossom end rot?

Posted by fireweed22 none (My Page) on

I grew 30+ varieties this summer, and the only variety with BER is Smoky Mountain. I only had one plant of SM so unsure if it was bad genetics or if it is very specific in requirements.
The flavor is unique and worth growing. Thanks.

It is widely held that genetics plays a role in BER.
I have also experienced BER on Roma and San Marzano.

Now we can add Smokey Mountain to the list.

You can add Rose de Berne to that list. They were the only variety to experience BER in my garden this year and my Roma's were clear (but they had a bad case of it last year).

ok, lets build up a list of bad bad BEReds.

You can add Golden Boy to bad BER varieties. Tons of fruit, pretty color -- I have had one edible one so far this season due to BER.

A single variety can have BER in one season and as grown the next season have no BER at all.

And that's b'c there are so many variables involved with BER and several here have posted those variables, myself included, in many threads, all to be found by just searching, but I bet that Dave has them all compiled in one link, bless him. ( Smile)

Thanks Carolyn

With so many tomato varieties to choose from, why take a risk with a BER prone ? I don,t like throwing away my tomatoes. So I will try to keep my distance from those BERies. haha

Hoping I haven't just killed smokey mountain as an heirloom, making other feel it's prone to disease!
This was just one seedling planted of the variety- surely it was simply a poor specimen of the variety!
