thank you for the Opalka Dr. Carlyn

last week i got my first ripe opalka and it has my vote.

i planted 150 plants and they are prolific. some are as large as 12 oz.

in season i make a raw salsa and i can't wait until i have a dozen opalkas to use in my salsa.

i have ripe cayenne and jalapeno peppers, 3" walla walla onions and garlic.

i am going to stock up on corn chips and burn the carbon out of my system. lol

the Opalka is one great tomato.

I'm glad Opalka worked well for you Dean, but the person you should be thanking is Carl Swidorski's wife whose family heirloom it was.

Carl was a colleague of mine at the last place where I taught and it was he who gave me the seeds. I would send out letters to faculty looking for family heirlooms and also threaten students with failing grades ( wink), unless they could give me some family heirlooms, also the maintenance workers and anyone else I could badger.

I could make a nice list of varieties I got from all those folks and I think in many ways I appreciate them more than they did since in many cases there was no one in the families interested enough to carry on the tradition of growing the varities each year and saving seeds.

Well, I suppose you could thank me for making the variety available to the public. LOL

Carolyn, who didn't expect that answer you gave. LOL

i got that and that is a very important thing too.

Thank you again.

Dean

ps; some of my Opalkas are huge. one of the ladies who does a lot of our canning does not like the small paste tomatoes and is happy with the opalks because of it's size. i like it because of it's taste.

Yes, Opalka is my number one favorite tomato.

They make tons of sauce with very very little waste, they are almost all fresh! And I find they are tasty for fresh eating as well. I think, for me, they are the perfect tomato.

We also had a wet cold summer, and they held up the best out of the 10+ varieties I grew against the blight.

I agree, nice size fruits, great flavor, unique foliage, monster sized plants, hardly any seeds(not a plus for seed saving),, I grow them every year and have some in the freezer as i type. Thanks to all for OPALKA!!
