Why do my Heirlooms split?

Probably on old topic, but as my Brandywine Heirlooms mature they beging to split. By the time I harvest them, there are large scars, evidence of deep splits, in the tomato body. Most look like splits that healed over, so there is a sort of vegetable scab over the trough. A few are deep enough to stay open. By the time I cut around the affected areas, about 20% of the tomato is left and it tastes great.

Can someone explain what is happening? Is there a cure? Should I consider another tomato, if so, what?

I have photos if someone would like to see one.
