Unstable segregation line

Have been looking at Justyna, offered by Tatiana website, looks like it is F6 and she lists it as unstable segregation line yet. Plant is looking very attractive though. How many seedling one would think is safe enough to keep if indeed it is still unstable? Mind you, real estate is premium LOL

I've linked to it below so folks don't have to cut and paste.

If you read the last sentence it says it already IS stable and she will be listing seeds for sale in 2014.

Carolyn , who added a few words to the above for clarity

Here is a link that might be useful: Justyna

I think what Linda was looking at is on the first page of the Justyna page -- in the summary box off to the right above the picture, it says in darker typeface: "variety type - unstable segregation line. " I'm thinking that Tania might have meant this as a historical development note, since when you read her F6 growout tab note, she does say that all plants now had uniform fruit.

And does say that seeds will be sold in 2014.

Dee, I didn't see what you referred to ,I was just following Tania's grow outs at various generations.

Ddsack, yep that the box I was reading. So after F6 produced all plants of the same we consider it done accumulating appr genetic collection and will stay true- providing no crosses happen- for all many years it could be grown. At no point we should see segregation of the line again?
Also In order to keep the line going would I need to keep at least 2 plants? or one is enough? And to choose seeds from the biggest and bestest?

What is the risk here ?

The seeds 6th generation of a hybrid ? There is a chance that your plant might take after any of its grands, immediate or far back. But the probability of going 6 generations back is very slim.
LIFE IS AN ADVENTURE, DARE IT !

Tantia just posted today that she added Justyna and also many new Russian tomato varieties to her website catalog, seeds for sale, along with some new peppers and melons and I forget what else right now.

She does not list seeds for sale unless the varieties are stable,or at least stable as grown by her the very last time before she lists them for sale.

Carolyn.

RE: Unstable segregation line

I got curious and did some investigating on Tania's Tomatobase to see what other designations she used in the Variety type info. I randomly looked at a bunch of different tomatoes and came up with these. There may be more.

Variety type:

commercial

heirloom
created heirloom
family heirloom

hybrid

off type, stabilized accidental cross
off type, unknown

open-pollinated
open-pollinated, commercial
open-pollinated, de-hybridized
open-pollinated, heirloom
open-pollinated, stabilized accidental cross

unstable segregation line

And sometimes she leaves Variety Type blank for those tomatoes with only partial information available.
When I see the combined terms, it looks to me like she is using it as for added info on tomato origins, and not necessarily as a descriptor for the current state of the seeds. So you would have to check any further grow out notes to discover the current state of F generation of the seeds.

I would be confident that any seeds she sells would be quite stable and I would think growing two plants would be sufficient - to compare the two, as well to have a back up plant in case one did not do well.

Thanks for answers!
I am not questioning quality or info at the least, my interest rather theoretical on what to do on my end.
Am firmly in with my Russian seeds too LOL some of them my parents used to grow so hoping for same...
