Sophie's Choice questions

Four quick questions for Sophie's Choice growers:

1. What is the max temperature SC will tolerate for you? Does it wilt and die? Just stop producing/growing?
2. What kind of yield do you get? Bonus points if you can guesstimate # fruit/pounds. :o)
3. How long does the bulk of production last for you until you're looking at mostly leaves with a few stragglers?
4. What kind of DTM do you get? I've seen DTM ranging from 50-80 days...

I know DTM is widely considered meaningless, but here in Madrid the difference between 50 DTM and 80 DTM is 15-20º average daily temperature.

I really like the idea of raising a few SC plants and gifting them to friends as "novelty" tomatoes that will produce a flush of respectable-sized, decent-tasting tomatoes in a compact package, then basically die in the summer inferno...
All the catalog writers seem to agree that SC does not handle heat well, but I can't figure out if SC will be able to produce its main wave before the furnace goes full blast.

RE: Sophie's Choice questions

I can only answer based on how it grows for me in my zone 5 garden in upstate NY/

1. What is the max temperature SC will tolerate for you? Does it wilt and die? Just stop producing/growing?

it took brief spells of 80-90 F weather but is an early variety so didn't have to withstand prolonged periods of high heat. it produced throughout the summer season but the fruits were smaller than the initial much larger fruits. it never wilted for me but when rain is scant I also water my tomato plants.

2. What kind of yield do you get? Bonus points if you can guesstimate # fruit/pounds. :o)

I don't count or weigh fruits although I estimnate them based on doing that much earlier in my so called heirloom career. I call the yield high early in the season.

3. How long does the bulk of production last for you until you're looking at mostly leaves with a few stragglers?

I mentioned that above.

4. What kind of DTM do you get? I've seen DTM ranging from 50-80 days...

I define early somewhere in the up to 65 -70 day period of time and its' definitiely an early variety for me as opposed to midseason or late seaon. I find DTM's to be pure guesstimated b'c there are so many variables involved so prefer to define DTM's as a range applying to early, mid season and late season/

I received the original seeds from Barry Comdon of CA and they were not named. I asked him to name the variety and he deferred to the woman who had given him the seeds and she had gotten them from someone in Edmonton, Canada. So it was she who named it Sophie's Choice/

Hope that helps.

Carolyn

Thanks Carolyn! Exactly the response I was looking for. This forum wouldn't be the same without you!
