So I have surrendered my community veggie plot which has been tilled since then. I got cover crop mix of grains and legums and used some inoculant for legums and was lucky it worked really well as right after I sneaked to the plots and sowed it, drizzling rain kept going for almost 24 hrs. Am not sure if one grain is better than other, never done cover crops in the past. Not sure what to expect. Community will be tilling plots in the spring before releasing them to gardeners. Any additional info on cover crops management from those of you who have done it would be greatly appreciated.

If your going to use a cover crop you will need a turning plow to get it under the ground. I have used clover or fetch. If your cover crop get 1 to 2 feet tall I'm not sure if a tiller can bury the growth. Anyting turned under is great for the land. A long time ago they sometimes used Rye, not sure if I would use that. I guess if things get to tall you could have it bush hogged before tilling. Not sure if even than a tiller would work.

I used hairy vetch in a not very big area and just cut it by hand. The dried up dead plant was used as a mulch. There are u tube videos of this for use in a tomato garden. The vetch is pretty if you let it bloom and I did let some of it bloom and climb on the fence.

In zone 5, IL,... what are your current temperature range? If you sowed in November, I doubt they they will grow. I could be wrong. Unless you get a few weeks of real warm and sunny weather.

Thank you! those are good questions and it is a bit of experiment for me. Weather is still quite nice, we have occasional light frost in the mornings but days and most nights are good. I think we will still have 4 weeks of growing easily before growth stops and cold sets in. I will have to figure out exactly how village does its tilling as they are doing it with big machine, I would assume they do not remove ¨weeds¨ and just plow them under but have to check

Lindalana ... good luck ! I am curious to see the outcome. Please report back, if you will. My impression is that fall crop has to grow enough to make it worthwhile , as green manure around April.
