'Good Production'

I see people refer to "good production" (or "good producer" or "heavy producer" etc)

I've seen some blogs/forum posts/etc that have got me wondering about what the heck "good production" means.

I'm sure it's a heck of a loaded question, but is there any kind of generality?

I've been told one of the varities I have out in my sideyard is notorious for being a POOR producer (whatever the heck that means) but it's laden down with fruit and setting more all the time. So if that's a "poor" producer... what the heck is a GOOD producer??

Poor, medium, good, excellent, outstanding producer...... I think it's all relative and based on your own experience of growing like varieties.

If I grow 25 large pink fruited varieties I'm going to see differences in production. Someone growing those same 25 varieties in another geographic area with different soil, weather, amendments used, etc., may see different results.

So I think it's all relative and all you can do is to make some comparisons by growing your own plants.

And how you determine production is again something only you can decide on. Is it going to be the number of total fruits/plant in which case cherries win, LOL, or is it going to be total weight of fruits off one plant in which case you'll be doing a lot of weighing.

As for me, I just eyeball production b'c no way am I going to count or weigh fruits which I used to do years ago and once having done it for a few seasons I really do think that eyeballing is much easier.

For me:

Great = 4 pounds of tomatoes per week
Good = 3 pounds
Average = 2 pounds
Poor = less than 1.5 pounds per week

Thanks for the feedback. I figured it would be a "you say 'mater, I say 'maater" sort of thing.

Then going to say miserably disappointed with the Green Zebras, thrilled with the Belize Pink Hearts...
