Finally moved tomatoes to greenhouse!

redlinenikolas

This Saturday we finally moved our 18 tomato seedlings into 5-gallon buckets, and into the small greenhouse! :-)

http://mrtimeattack.wordpress.com/2010/12/11/tomatoes/

I have 6 each of the following:

Voyager(F1)

Celebrity(F1)

Washington Cherry(OG)

All are determinate.

If all goes as planned, I'll have fruit ready to pick in about 45 days! Mmmm Fresh grown tomatoes in February! Can't ask for much more than that! :-)

Tomatoes are still doing quite well! They are growing SUPER fast now that they're in the 5-gallon containers. Temps have been getting pretty low outside at night (26 last night, 22 tonight), so the space heater will have to do the trick. Still no blossoms on any of the plants. Hopefully they'll start blossoming in the next two weeks. Then I'll just have to worry about pollinating the blossoms.

If it's sunny outside tomorrow, I'll take some updated pictures of the plants and post them to my blog!

Looks like 3 of my Cherry plants are getting their first blossoms! Hopefully the other 15 plants will start getting blossoms soon too! After receiving about 3 inches of snow last night, we're in for 7-10 days of sunshine, so that will be great for the plants! The little 6 x 8 greenhouse is doing well so far. Naturally, I need to have a small space heater inside, but it's working just fine!

Here is an update on the blog.. Pics can be found at the blog.

The plants continue to grow well! 9 out of the next 10 days will be full of sunshine. Perfect for the plants to grow, grow, grow!

I also grown tomatoes plants this time. They are growing very fast . We maintained that temperature below 35 degree as this is the best suitable condition for growing tomatoes..

I had a hot house last year with impressive results, so I
added a 2nd and bigger one and have about 20 mostly heirlooms
doing very well and we are harvesting some already. I also
built a hoophouse 8X12 and have hundreds of seedlings in
there for intended sale and an elementary school give-away
program for 3rd graders. All three have needed heaters a
couple times but cooling is a bigger problem in the hoophouse.
I should have put in a bigger vent. (next year.) For now,
I just leave the door open. LOL, I learned that in So. Calif., it is almost impossible to find a storm door.
Thank goodness, ReStore (Habitat for Humanity's thrift
    store) had one.

    AlpineJS,

What did you do to ensure the blossoms were polinated and began dropping fruit? Shake the blossoms/branch? Touch the blossoms? Use a brush? Insects are not making it into my GH, so they aren't going to help polinate the flowers....

What part of SoCal are you in?

Redline....besides talking sweetly to my tomatoes, I have
every 3 cages tied together, so I shake them for self
pollination. I am E. of San Diego at about 1500 ft. elev.
We get occasional frost which doesn't bother the hothouses
or hoophouse as they have spaceheaters. I cover my topsy-turvy plants with plastic and they seem to survive okay.
I did lose two plants in a hothouse and don't know why as
they were producing a heavy crop. I am still learning even
though my business card (for selling) says "Thaddeus Q. Tomato, Professor of Tomatology, Heirloom Univ."

alpinejs.. I'm just been shaking and flicking the blossoms. We'll see if me efforts have been effective in about a week or two when fruit hopefully begins to set.

A week and a half and I'll be starting my Spring/Summer crop of tomato seedlings! :-)

Here are some updated images of the tomatoes in my small greenhouse!

All of the plants are flowering like mad! Most of the plants are setting fruit. It's prolly gonna take a while for the beefsteak and hothouse fruit to get big and ripen!

    These are all determine varieties...

In the same greenhouse I have my Spring tomato seedlings sprouting now (grape, cherry, beefsteak, hothouse, etc.)
