Hi all, haven't been here in a really long time. On Dec 14, 2014 I received an email in my spam folder that purported to be from Carolyn Male and the subject line said From Carolyn Male. The thing is, although I have had the privilege of meeting Carolyn years back (at Hortus in Pasadena, Calif.), we haven't emailed privately for years if we ever did. So: has anyone else gotten this? Have I been hacked or was Carolyn or perhaps Gardenweb? Needless to say this email won't be opened until I know for sure it is legitimate. Thanks for any insight! Dawn

Carolyn has her email listed on her personal page. Why not just drop her a note and ask her if the email is from her? Dave

| Yes^^^. Carolyn's Male's mail password was hacked and commandeered to send spam which probably contains a virus intended to do the same to the recipients. You should delete that offending email without further thought, carefully. Carolyn indicates she changed her password and again has access to her mail so you can compose a private message to her and communicate directly; and her email is in Tania from Russia and maybe 100 other places on the internet, but not on her GW profile since she feels that is a higher risk *sigh*. | Please do read my explanation in the thread here where I posted about Tania. You should not leave it in a spam folder, delete it. No one has received a virus from it that I know of. My computer man has several anti virus softwares on my desktop, several ant imalware ones as well as ones from my browser. Someone started a thread about it elsewhere, several who responded were computer experts, and none of the anti-anythings can prevent a password to a browser, which is my entree to the net from being hacked. Different folks got those em's from different senders and different folks also got different lists of those included in their e-mail. Again, delete it, do NOT keep it in a spam folder and actually no one has said it went directly to a Spam folder since it was just a regular e-mail, unless you had all ems' from me blocked/ Hi Blue Jean, ja. I remember you well, and it's true that I don't think you and I ever did em each other. I knew some of folks by em addys, but certainly not all, and the computer experts said to me that those who do the hacking also include em's that were not in my em system. I keep no address book b'c I was warned about that many years ago since it's one of the targets that hackers go for first. So relax, no viruses involved as reported to me, NEVER click on a link when you open up an em like that and as I said before no one has reported back any viruses at all, but most know better than to do that anyway. I thinnk all of those bogus em's went out around the 14th of Dec. I've had the same browser with the same password for close to 30 years and with all the anti stuff on the desktop I thought I was OK, but not when it comes to hacking a password. And I can only apologize for what happened, but it was not my fault as I've explained above. Carolyn, who notes that anyone can be hacked regardless of the software you have, again, the savvy computer folks told me how it's done, but to be honest, I didn't have a clue as to the HOW, too complicated for me to understand. |

No need to apologize! I looked at the forum a bit before I posted the question but I missed the previous discussion, and actually hadn't even gotten on the computer for a week, so that's why the delay in me asking. I have security on my computer and I try to be careful about what I open, since I was told that the damage starts when you open it (although I don't know that that is always the case, as fast as things change when tech is involved)) I had a feeling it was bogus email, so I never opened it . Things I have gotten for years randomly end up in my spam so now I just look there first, sort it and then look at my inbox. Dawn

Dawn, and thanks for reminding me of your name, OK to open it but don't click on any links inside nor respond to it. I have a picture in my mind of possibly you and some others I used to know well leaning on some pallets in the side yard at Hortus. And maybe you remember my dog and pony show as well as my sitting out near the front entrance sighning copies of my book where there was a canopy and it was hot as H withTom Wagner sitting next to me as he asked to do. LOL And staff from Hortus bringing out pitchers of icy tomato juice. It's too bad that Hortus had to close but the plant sales still called Tomatomania live on and every season I get an e-mail with the schedule of where they will be held, mostly in S Cal. Carolyn, who also gets from time to time em's from Mary-Anne Durkee asking me to come back or to join linked in.
