Unknown Pest Cutting Down Tomato Plants at Base

There is an unknown, unseen pest that is "beavering" the trunks of my tomato plants at ground level. Does anyone know what this mysterious pest might be and how to combat it?

Size of plants?

If transplants, perhaps cutworms? (They work at night.)

If larger/older plant, please post image.

They are transplants 6-9". How do I stop these cut worms?
