Saw your pictures Jerry - sure looks like sunburn and what you describe is classic sunburn - some call it sun scorch. Affect the top shoulders of the fruit only.

If you are a heavy pruner, cut back on the pruning to provide more cover for the fruit. If not then you may need to provide some sort of shade for the plants in the hottest part of the day.

We get bad sunburn here too which is one reason why I gave up agressive pruning years back.

If all else fails try picking the fruit at the blush or break stage (when it begins to show color on the blossom end of the fruit) and let them finish ripening indoors out of direct sunlight.

I'm so glad I saw this thread, thank you for posting, Jerry. I planted my tomatoes east of my rose bushes as I think they'll help provide shade to the tomatoes in the afternoons.
