@#$%^& birds

What's the best way to dissuade birds from eating my tomato plants. I guess the black birds think tomatoe leaves and stems make excellent nesting material; because I caught one in the act this morning. As soon as I took the milk jugs frost protectors off they went to town. I put them back on the plants they haven't killed yet and luckily I have backup plants ready to be planted, but I need to figure out a way to stop this. Three of the plant are destroyed stripped to the ground and almost every one of them has some damage but they didn't manage to get the growing point yet. The plants are a little thicker than a pencil and about 10-12 inches tall.
