My transplants are dying

growneat

About a week ago I transplanted my tomatoes to the garden. They had been outside in pots day and night for about a week and were well hardened. Several days after I planted them they began to look sick. They were starting to wilt. I sheltered them from the sun and misted them thinking maybe it was the heat. They continued to wilt and several were dead. When I looked closely at the dead ones the stem from ground level down was rotten, brown and mushy. What is this and what can I do? Several other plants appear to be starting to wilt though the majority of plants and those still in pots look great. Is this the end?
