I am new to this site. I have read Carolyn Males book as well as lots of material about tomatoes. I have 5 Earth Boxes with tomatoes at the moment. I am growing Black Cherry/Isis Candy/Dr Carolyn/Jaune Flamme/Lillians Yellow/Riesentraube/Golden Gem/Marianna's Peace/Brandywine Sudduth strain/Peron.

I planted the seeds straight into the EarthBoxs on 9 Feb 08.

They are now finally doing really good. Here are the pics I took today. I noticed that there are some bugs at the base of the tomatoes and on some of the leaves. Jaune Flamme has the most.

What are they and what do I do to get rid of them. I think they are going to hurt the plants....

Most are aphids. The black and white is a beneficial.

All I get are "image deleted" notices. If you will use the 3rd URL under the photobucket image - the one that begins As jean says - aphids - and they can just be spritzed off with water. If you prefer you can use soapy water spray of 1 T. liquid dish soap in 1 gallon of water and mist the aphids with it. But do not spray it in the direct sun or the heat of the day and don't drench the leaves with it - just the bugs. ;)

They are attracted to excessive N in the plants so go easy on the ferts.

    Good luck.

2036 is what I call black and white.

With the others -- the "white" appears to be clear wings that look white due to angle of the light.

But I must admit that a closer view would help. (Will be challenging without macro capabilites.)

Here is another try at the pics.

Thanks all for the info. The problem is that the Jaune Flamme looks to be affected by the bugs at the base of the plant. The leaves are turning yellow followed by the stem and then it wilts. I got a natural product that is made up of oils called Organocide. I sprayed the plants last night. I hope I did not hurt them.....

The pics are in macro mode and up really close. Those bugs are very small. Most of them would fit in a dull Pencile point.

Yeah it sure looks like a bad infestation of black winged aphids (with a few little flies mixed in). Most of the time the plants can stand some aphids but if they get too bad it will start to yellow and some of the leaves curl and twist. But in the long run they don't usually cause really serious damage. You just have to keep ahead of them because they multiply like rabbits. ;)

In your climate they are attracted to the moisture. But the big attractant is any excess nitrogen so go easy on the feeding.

As for treatment, I'm not familiar with the product you mentioned but if it doesn't work first hose as many as possible off with water and then try the soapy water mix I posted above. If you prefer to buy something for them then check out Safer's Garden Spray. It's organic and quite effective on aphids.

    Hope this helps.
