there are so many more experienced gardeners on this forum, but just from reading their posts my first question would be:

are you sure you don't have cutworms? Are there scars/wounds on any of your other tomato stems?

but don't panick yet...I'm really not the super duper expert. Also I don't know how high the wound is, but if it's at the base of the stem, can you try to jack up a lot of soil up and beyond it? that might help the stem develop more roots, esp above the wound to assure your fruit get enough to drink.

tomatoesaretops-The wound is about 20 inches up after a fork in the main stem but was on the stem that had the most fruit set. Its just to high to build up the soil. I have had dark green 2 inch worms attacking my tomatillo leaves about 2 weeks ago that I treated but no signs of anything else.

well I guess the hole is too high for adding soil. Perhaps you can take a little piece of towel and soak it in water and tie it firmly but not too tightly around the issue in question...at least it'll stay moist.

As far as your two inch worms...well I say look online for images of tomato pests. I'm always skeptical that worms ever go away...i think they just lay low for a while and theninvolve themselves in some sketchy covert ops.

I wouldn't worry about the damage -- the center of the stem isn't used for much anyway, and a hollow cylinder is almost as strong a support as a solid one. Nutrients and water are taken up close to the surface, just under the skin, where it hasn't been disrupted.

The damage itself sounds like a stem borer, which are fairly uncommon and (as I suggested above) not a huge problem. Be alert to the fact that the stem is a little weaker, and you can either tie a stake to it or figure that you can tie it back up again if it does fall over. A splint and a little tape takes care of a split trunk, and the plant hardly notices most of the time.
