Something eating my tomatoes.... no bugs but a big ho

I am new to veggie gardening. I have had plenty of great big red tomatoes, but when I go to pick them, something has beat me to it. It appears something is eating the tomatoes, but there aren't any bugs around. I saw a few ants, that is all. The tomatoes are inside the cages, and I don't think there are any birds. Thanks in advance for your help - I'm really craving a great tomato!!

Could be any number of things - a squirrel, a oppossum, a rat... something with teeth.

I don't think it looks like bird or bug damage.

Angular damage at edge of wound suggests birds.
