Tough green spots inside tomato?

To start with, I don't have the best garden soil in the world, but I've been gardening there for about 20 years with modest success. This has been a strange weather year in some ways, too much rain the first of June, hardly any for the next three weeks and then too much again after that to present. But I kept the tomatoes watered and they looked good. I had planted a mixture of celebrity and big boy plants and the vines were loaded with bigger then average (for me) tomatoes. I had put out the plants mid-April, and if past experince was any rule, I figured I'd have at least some ripe tomatoes by the 4th of July, but this years tomatoes just didn't seem to want to get ripe, especially around the stem, and when they did they have this green/white core type fiber sort of scattered through the body of the tomato. I've never encountered this sort of thing before. Any thoughts?
