Strange growths on stems.

Can someone tell me what the growths on the stems of my tomato plants are and what causes them. These plants are in a hanging basket. My plants are starting to produce fruit, but are about two weeks behind the same type of plants that were planted in the ground. I have attached an image called SSG-2.jpg that show the growths.
