Before discussing possible treatments why don't we try to diagnose what the problem is b'c you've said black spot but if you mean a foliage infection there are both bacteria and fungi that casue those infections, which can be different from what you also mentioned, which is blight, a word that many folks use to describve a sick plant.

Could you please share with us if you see any wilting when the plants shouldn't be wilting and if there's any foliage color change.\

And about the spots, I know you don't have any pictures, I don't have a camera either, so how about going to the thread called problem Solver #2 here on this first page and looking at pictures of:

Early Blight ( A. solani)
Spetoria Leaf Spot
Bacterial Spot
Bacterial Speck

And see if you can match up what you have in your garden.

is it just the Romas that have this or other varieties that have it as well.

I can tell you that Romas and most paste tomatoes are very susceptible to Early Blight ( A. solani),. and whether that's what you're seeing or something else, perhaps the pictures will help.

It looks like Black Speck and possibly early blight. My cherry tomatoes have it also. The specks appear, then yellowing of leaf and stem until brown.
