The "big green horned things" are called tomato horn worms (although they are actually tobacco horn worms) and they are easily controlled with hand picking or application of Bt (Dipel, Thiricide) a common caterpillar insecticide. I have so many birds patrolling around my yard this year I really haven't had a hornworm problem. I remember seeing one still fairly small, but I was in the middle of something and didn't remove it right away. I went back maybe an hour later, looked over the entire plant(knowing they are really good at hiding), yet didn't find it and had no more damage.
