Do any of your friends or nieghbors have a kids. A couple of 11 year old boys(or girls) would have a blast at night with a flashlight. Course the way kids are today you may have to offer a bounty on each worm found.

Don't give up the tomatoes.

I am having problems with tomato hornworms also. They are evil and destructive to my blessed tomatoes. The tomato horn worm has a natural preditor, and I have not been lucky enough to have it in my garden. There is a wasp that lays its eggs on the worm, and as the eggs hatch and grow they get their food from the worm that they are attached to. It is a parasitic relationship, with the wasp eggs winning. The worm does look ate up, and the eggs grow into larva. The worm begins to look like some wierd science fiction moovie, so don't kill these worms. They are already dead, and if you crush or destroy the worm at this stage you will destroy the creature that feeds on it in nature. Best of luck, Paul.

Since you double posted your thread here and in the main forum and at that time of night more folks are reading there than here, please note you already have 16 responses there where folks have answered all your questions about the life cycle of the hornworm and have given you some very good ideas about how to deal with them.
