Low fruit yields, spindly-looking plants

Once I read the rules, I realized the wisdom of being more descriptive in the "subject" line, so this is a new thread as a follow-up to "Troubled Tomatoes" --

Thanks, Carolyn, for your response about Hortus, etc. Plants continue to look terrible (spindly, dead crispy leaves) at the bottom all the way up to the top quarter, but the worst thing is the only plant that has a decent yield so far is Green Zebra. Cherokee Purple, Russian Persimmon, Druzba, Pineapple and Marvel Stripe all with just a couple to four or five fruits. I hope it isn't time to go back to "modern" tomatoes -- I so love the heirlooms. I CONFESS I planted in the same bed as last year, when the plants were huge and healthy. Could this be the problem -- not rotating?
