Hornworms turning black

Desert_Eagle

This is the most strange thing. My tomato hornworms are turning black.

The season for worms is just getting started here in desert. The other day while patroling the garden for the pests

I found one hanging from a branch, black and mushy. I figured they all can't make it and possibly had died from a spider or something else. but now I'm finding bunches of them large and all black or medium size and half green half black.

Other than looking sunburned they seem to be healthy.

Just curious, never seen anything like this.
