Did you look for aphids (very tiny critters crawling on the underside of leaves)? Also, see if you can spot any tiny caterpillars. Your first pic at least looks like my caterpillar larvae infested tomato leaves.

I did look for aphids because I had some on my roses but I did not find any on the tomoatoes. I have not found any type of bug on the tomato leaves. It has also been several weeks since I have seen an aphid on my roses but the damage to the leaves on the tomato plants has continued to spread.

This is my first year growing tomatoes, so please excuse any unintended ignorance on my part.

Have you grown the same tomato plants in these same containers before? Maybe the container is too small for the plant. One of my container tomato plants (Sungold) is about 7 feet tall now and I suspect some of the dying leaves on that are because the container is too small.

This is my first year using these containers. I would expect to loose some leaves due to the continers becoming too small but one plant has almost no leaves left on it and the others did not grow beyond 2-3 feet tall. It seemed like growth and fruit production were stunted when the leaves became affected. Thank you all for your input I do appreciate the help.

What you have is Bacterial Spot, the black patches are classic. Strip off all the affected foliage to keep it from spreading. The bacteria which cause it can be seed-borne but can also be air borne and thrives in moist conditions with warm weather. You can Google it for more details.

Copper-containing fungicides can help alleviate losses.
