tomato blossom end rot...

We have a couple of tomato plants that have some tomatoes with blossom end rot/disease which I'm told may be due to a calcium deficiency? Old timers said to buy a bag of epsom salts (cheap!) in the the pharmacy dept. & mix some in the soil by each plant. It sure seems to have worked! Any one else tried this on tomatoes with the brown 'scabs on the bottoms?
