Purple/brown hornworm?

Posted by macky77 2a (My Page) on

I was wondering if someone could help me out. I found this guy on our rural driveway yesterday. I'm assuming it's a hornworm of some sort (horn sticking out toward camera on left), but I can't seem to find anything like it online to make a definite ident. All the hornworms I can find are green. If it helps, I live in east-central Saskatchewan. Thanks!

RE: Purple/brown hornworm?

I believe that it is an Elm Sphinx, also called Four horned Sphinx. Sphinx caterpillars come in a wide range of colors, by the way.
