The thrips were reported as being bad this year. Are there certain weather conditions that would eleviate thrip problems?

Yes, thrips are the major vector. And they tend to be bad when the weather is particularly hot and dry for an extended period, as it certainly was this year.

Used at proper intervals, pyrethrin can be a fairly effective control for thrips. So can insecticidal soap sprays, for that matter.

It is a good idea to keep any weedy areas mowed regularly. Also, several ornamentals can serve as host plants for thrips (table in the link I've provided below).

There is really no 'sure thing' when it comes to prevention. All you can really do is use good garden sanitation and be proactive in monitoring your plants.

BHN640's are suppose to be bred to help with TSPD, but I have read other posts stating that these were not very tasty but lasted well. Comments?

As far as specifics as to how tolerant BHN640 may actually be to tomato spotted wilt virus, I'd encourage you to read results of some of the trials, which you should be able to find doing a google search.

As for taste, I've grown BHN640 (and BHN 444) before and personally don't feel like either one of them are worthwhile. If those were my only two variety options, I truly wouldn't even bother to grow tomatoes at all. Just my opinion.

But, since 640 is readily available in the box stores and fairly compact, I'd encourage you to try it for yourself and see what you think.
