new and wanting to create a topiary

Hi!

We have turned part of our property into a football field, complete with uprights. We would like to create some large size topiaries of people around the field. Can anyone suggest the best way to do this? We were thinking of making frames out of rebar and chicken wire and stuffing them with moss - although ivy would be fun too. Our climate is fairly mild, but we do get temps in the teens in the winter.

Thanks for all of your help!!

RE: new and wanting to create a topiary

Hi Alison,

I am new too! And also want to make topiaries.

It sounds like you have some pretty unique and fun ideas. If you stuff it with moss and use ivy you will get more instant gratification from the moss sculpture rather than waiting for a form to fill with a shrub.

Though I would like to point out that I think Ivy is evil! I am sure I will hear it, posting this on a topiary forum.

But I will share anyway. Ivy is a highly invasive plant contained in a pot for topiaries it can be very lovely however if it is left unchecked the results are dreadful. It is fast growing and takes down trees and is almost impossible to get rid of once established. I am constantly struggling with it invading my yard and garden from my neighbor’s yard, which is entirely ivy!

Have fun,

Annette
