Boxwood topiary

I have 4 existing boxwoods that range from 3' to 4' tall and wide that are currently shaped into balls. They are several years old. I would like to change each shrubs shape to an umbrella. Do I just trim the branches from the bottom of each shrub so that they have no leaves and/or smaller branches? I am completely new to topiaries and have no idea what to do. Thanks in advance for your help.

RE: Boxwood topiary

I have hesitated to answer this, hoping someone with more experience would. I would think that the shape you are refering to would be highly unstable (too much weight on top with no support underneath) and difficult to maintain with this type of shrub since the lateral branching of boxwood is not strong enough and would droop. Mind you, this is just an educated guess, not a recommendation based on exact experinece.
