what can I use for a Minnesota hardy evergreen topiary in pots

I'd like to have 2 topiaries flank my front porch pillars and I'd like them to be evergreen - and overwinter. I've been told Eugenia and boxwood will die and I don't really like the ivy topiaries much, plus I'd prefer to leave them (covered in burlap??) outside to overwinter rather than bring them into the house. I could move them to the back deck for winter (less wind exposure but less light as well).

I have 2 boxwood shrubs in the ground in a similar spot and they seemed to do fine over winter. I'd prefer to have the topiaries potted, but if I need to put them in the ground instead I can do that.....

If I were to get the christmas tree shape instead of the balls or spirals would that help them to overwinter? I am not a huge fan of Juniper, but is that my only choice? I like the brighter greens and I don't really like the dull, prickly, dry look of Juniper.

Love to hear your advice and suggestions
