Boxwood animal topiary

Hello all, I am not new to gardening but very new to this topic, so bear with me!

I have recently moved and my new home has a couple of mature boxwoods plopped in the oddest locations. My first thought was to remove them, but now I am thinking that it would be fun to attempt animal-shape topiaries.

However, in exploring this site, it sounds like most topiaries are started when the shrub is small, and grown into cages to create the shapes. Is it possible to transform a mature boxwood into topiary?

I hope my questions are not too "dumb" :-) thanks for any help...

hmmm. Creativity is called for here...

One is tempted to say -No!.
However, if I was stuck with some ancient boxwoods, I'd certainly look into sculpting them somehow. That does not mean (although you sure could try it!) carefully examining the heavy trunk material of the tree to see if it resembles anything you recognize and then cutting it to look like it; but it certainly means you could cut up the small wood of the tree out and enjoy the sculpted trunk of your boxwood. Look at the Bonsai sites for beautiful shapes; you'd essentially be making a big bonsai out of your boxwood. This can be lovely, plus a benifit to the animals and birds of the yard who have probably been using the boxwoods for housing. Age is expensive in plants; if you can (CAREFULLY!) cut your boxwoods to accentuate their age it could be really nice and unusual.
