Favorite trees/shrubs (non-fruit) for Espalier?

I love espalier! I'd like to have flowering or non-flowering trees/shubs, but not necessarily fruit trees. I was wondering what everyone's favorite espalier plant is?

Thanx...

I have a purple smoke tree which I grow for the foliage, not the seed heads (smoke) against my white stucco house, and I am very happy with it. I have also seen saucer magnolias used, and they seem to do very well, and are MOST IMPRESSIVE when they bloom!

A pyracantha variety named ‘Leilandii’ is a really good one for espalier, if you can find it.

I have been doing some research on the subject and came across a book called 'Living Fences a gardener's guide to Hedges, Vines and Espaliers' authored by Ogden Tanner and he suggests, Acer Palmatum varieties, Eastern redbud, flowering quince, cotoneaster, and winter jasmine for informal espaliers, as well as camellia, cedrus atlantica glauca, forsythia, holly, firethorn, yew and viburnum for both formal and informal designs. Also the book contains many different forms and how to achieve each one. I am still trying to decide as I need to also consider deer problems in the winter.

I too would like to use this technique along a fence line and assumed that the book mentioned above would be available in any bookstore. WRONG - the book is out of print and I cannot even find it available at used book websites or ebay. I even searched at the publishers site (Houghton Mifflin Company) *The same folks who published 'The Lord of the Rings'* and I get nowhere! If a book is out of print where can I find one?????

I found a used copy of 'Living Fences' on Half.com @ a great price. Amazon has a waiting list (7 waiting) for used copies as they become available.

The book I was refering to "Living fences" was obtained from my local library. I guess with our small town library being terribly underfunded, we hang onto all the oldies.
