Plants Mimicking a Treetop: How to Do It?

I'm making some garden art that is similar to Little & Lewis's absolutely awesome, be-still-my-heart Raintree (http://www.littleandlewis.com/garden.html). On top of the tree trunk, there is a round, flat platform to support the growing medium, and the plants that will mimic a tree top. However, I am stumped as to how the top of the tree is created as far as the growing medium and how it's contained. I hoped that the topiary folks would be able to educate me on how this - that is, growing low-growing plants in this type of shape - is done, or point me in the right direction to figure this out. Please help in any way - not knowing how this is done is driving me bananas! Thanks much.
