Prunning arbor vitea

Recently removed 18 arbor vitea of which the top half of the trees were beautifully developed but the bottom 6 feet were pretty tacky looking with mostly bare branches. The 18 have been replaced with 18 four foot specimens and I would like advise as to how to trim the trees so as to maintain good, full foliage from top to bottom of the trees.

The best way to keep a full evergreen is to trim it like a cone or pyramid shape ,large at the bottom ,narrow at the top. That will allow the bottom of the shrub to get enough light.

Thank you, Benoit, but what do you suggest, shearing just
tips of new growth green wood or deeper.

My personal preference is a natural appearance, not a tailored look.
